• Forget university? 4 steps to design your own education | Till H. Groß | TEDxKlagenfurt

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How important is your education to you? Have you ever thought about designing your own education? Till H. Groß is a remarkable young man with a passion for psychology. He took his education in his own hands...with mind blowing success. As soon as Till finished High-School he took his education in his own hands. After reading the whole psychology section of the small town library in his city, he set out to personally meet the authors of the books that thrilled him. In 2011, he started to consciously seek out the best psychologists, therapists and coaches all over Europe in order to learn from them. He visited them at home, attended their workshops and engaged in long email conversation asking numerous...

The belief in learning styles is so widespread, it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that in order to be effective educators, they must identify & cater to individual students' learning styles; it is estimated that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation describes the research findings that led to the creation of the course I designed and that I teach in the Community Education Department at the College of Marin, called In Your Own Hands: A Course in Self-Empowerment. We don’t have to believe all our thoughts. The brain creates a constant barrage of thoughts. The ability to objectively observe those thoughts rather than being a slave to them is what creates wellbeing. Self-limiting beliefs are particularly destructive when we fail to recognize them as simply insubstantial mental constructs and mistake them for reality. It can be useful to believe our thoughts when those thoughts create hope, a sense of control, empowerment, self-efficacy, confidence, and any attribute associated with health. However, with thoughts that ma...

Ecology and economy come from the same Greek word: oikos, meaning home. Ecology is the study of our home and economy is its management. In this mind-opening talk, internationally renowned spiritual thinker and educator Satish Kumar draws attention to the pervasive lack of a genuine understanding of nature in our education systems, which is contributing to the gross mismanagement of our planet. Kumar makes a compelling case for a more holistic approach to education, connecting our hands, hearts as well as heads. Satish Kumar is a world renowned speaker on ecological and spiritual issues. When he was only nine years old, Satish renounced the world and joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. However, with thoughts that make us feel bad about ourselves or that take away our hope, it is important to learn how to defuse or disentangle from those thoughts so that they cannot harm us. Every thought affects physiological functioning, but the degree to which we can objectively observe our thoughts has either a healthy or pathogenic affect on every cell in the body. From my literature reviews, I discovered that more than any other single factor, good social connections and a sense of belonging within a community contribute the most to health and wellbeing. The second most important factor was meaning and purpose. It is important to identify our personal values and to then live our lives in harmony with those self-identified values, which then confers meaning and purpose.
