Don't miss out on this conversational lesson, so that you can talk about university life just like a native English speaker! Afterwards, you can practice your new vocabulary by taking the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/university-english-expressions-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some very, very useful verbs we use when we talk about university. Okay? So if you're going to university, if you're taking the TOEFL test or the IELTS test, these words are very, very important, because they're very common and we use them all the time. So, to teach you these verbs, I've decided to tell you a true story about a friend of mine. My friend's name is Paul, and I'm going to tell you all about his university experience. While I tell you this story, it can help you if you imagine it in your head. Whenever you're learning new vocabulary, the more you can visualize or make a mental picture of the words you're learning, the easier it will be to remember them. Okay? And, if my friend, Paul, is watching this, I'm sorry, Paul. I'm telling some stories about you, maybe a little personal, so I apologize in advance. Okay, so let's get started about Paul's life and problems at university. All right, so the first verb I'm going to teach you is "enroll". "Enroll" or "sign up for". These mean the same thing and it's where... When you decide to go to university, you enroll in a class or you enroll in multiple classes. Paul enrolled in four classes. The class we're going to be focused on, though, is Psychology 100. Paul enrolls in Psychology 100. Okay? I can also say: "Paul signs up for Psychology 100." So this means he's decided to take Psychology 100, and he's told the university, so now he's in the class. He's enrolled. So, Paul, at first, was a very good student. He studied very hard. Okay? If you study hard, it means you "hit the books". "Hit the books" means "study hard". So, after Paul enrolled in Psych 100, Paul hit the books. Every night he went, he opened his book, and he studied. He hit the books. Then, the professor, the prof "hands out the assignment". So this means the professor of Psych 100, he gave Paul an assignment. "Here, Paul, I want you to write this essay." Okay? So the prof hands out an assignment. Okay? So the prof gives you work. So, after the prof hands out the assignment, Paul is very stressed. You know, he can't think about the assignment, he's too stressed out about it, so he ends up partying, he, you know, has fun. And then the assignment comes due, which means he has to give the assignment in, imagine on a Thursday. The night before the assignment is due, Paul decides to "pull an all-nighter". "Pull an all-nighter" means you stay up all night to finish something. So, for Paul, he did not have his assignment ready. It was not completed, so in order to get it finished, Paul stayed up all night working on it. So, at 3am, Paul was working at his... On his assignment. At 6am, Paul was working on his assignment. Well, Paul finished his assignment because he pulled an all-nighter. So the next day, he goes to class, and guess what he does? He has his assignment, he's very happy he's finished, he "hands in his assignment". So Paul gives his assignment to the professor. Paul hands in his assignment. We can also use the word "paper". "Paper" is another word for "essay". So, in Psych 100, Paul had to write an essay. We can say: "Paul wrote a paper", and he handed it in. So, if you... Why do some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago? In this passionate talk, second grade teacher Kayla Delzer speaks about her mission to revitalize learning and the classroom environment. Kayla explains how to release the power in the classroom by giving students ownership of their learning and making it relevant to them. Breaking down the four walls of the classroom allows her students to become globally connected - and you won’t believe the endeavors her students conquer by embracing purposeful technology. Kayla Delzer is a 2nd grade teacher and Project Lead the Way Lead Teacher in West Fargo, North Dakota. In August, she will begin her 8th year of teaching 2nd grade and her second year with West Fargo Public Schools (WFPS). Teaching is her true passion in life, and she enjoys her job and helping children to love learning and become creative problem solvers. Her students are her focus in life; they are like family to her. In August 2014, she completed her master’s degree in Elementary Education. She also serves on the Technology Task Force and Social Media Task Force for WFPS. Her classroom Twitter account, @tweetingtopdogs, has allowed her students to learn virtually with hundreds of classrooms and educational experts from all over the world. Kayla has teamed up with several companies to improve the lives of students and teachers, and she works frequently with GoNoodle and Remind. She is highly sought after by educational and technology companies to preview and review their products. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Ecology and economy come from the same Greek word: oikos, meaning home. Ecology is the study of our home and economy is its management. In this mind-opening talk, internationally renowned spiritual thinker and educator Satish Kumar draws attention to the pervasive lack of a genuine understanding of nature in our education systems, which is contributing to the gross mismanagement of our planet. Kumar makes a compelling case for a more holistic approach to education, connecting our hands, hearts as well as heads. Satish Kumar is a world renowned speaker on ecological and spiritual issues. When he was only nine years old, Satish renounced the world and joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. He left the monastic order and became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi's vision of a peaceful world into reality, before undertaking an 8,000 mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to America without any money, through deserts, mountains, storms and snow. Since 1973 he has been Editor at Resurgence magazine and his books include No Destination; You Are Therefore I Am; Spiritual Compass; Earth Pilgrim. Satish teaches, lectures and runs workshops on reverential ecology, holistic education and voluntary simplicity and is the founder of Schumacher College. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorates in Education (2000), Literature (2001) and in 2009 an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Exeter. Satish has regularly contributed to Radio 4′s Thought for the Day and has appeared as a guest on Desert Island Discs. He featured in BBC2′s Natural World Series — Earth Pilgrim: A Spiritual Journey into the Landscape of Dartmoor. Satish is a Vice President at the RSPCA. Coming to life in the 1970s with then-instructor Professor Emeritus Woodie Flowers at the lead, 2.007 was at the forefront of a revolution in engineering education, becoming one of the first hands-on classes to teach students not only how to design an object but also how to build it. Today, it’s a fun celebration of making that ends in an annual head-to-head robot competition on MechE’s Innovation Day in May.

Educator’s Rising encourages middle school and high school students who want to pursue careers in teaching. Students from across New Mexico attended a conference at NMSU and heard from different speakers on different ways of both teaching and learning. One session looked at hands-on STEM learning. Buzzers beeped, lights flashed, and fans spun as students created circuits using the “little bits” systems. Students get clues and have to figure out which parts complete the puzzle. Monique Pino, a senior at Carlsbad high says she was excited to find the correct answer. “I like a lot of challenges,” Pino said. “I like using my mind, so it was pretty fun.” She says students could be inspired to learn with the game-like aspect. “I think it would be more, it would get them more involved,” Pino said. “Then actually doing work on paper.” The Little Bits system has three stages, structured inquiry, guided inquiry and open inquiry. Roshani Rajbanshi, a graduate student with the STEM outreach program at NMSU, says the levels gradually get more challenging. “In the first one they had all the parts together,” Rajbanshi said. “Trying to learn how to do it, how to make a circuit, and then later on they brainstorm, and then a the end their would be open inquiry, you do whatever you need to make it creative and learn from there.” Rajbanshi says when the kids are building their circuits, they are learning with immediate results. “They come to the table,” Rajbanshi said. “The collaborate, the communicate, and they also do it all by their hands, and they can also see what projects are working and what’s not. Rajbanshi says it also teaches them the importance of working together. “When you go out in the field and work,” Rajbanshi said. “You’re not working on your own, you have to have that team. You have to communicate with them, you have to collaborate with them, it’s not one persons thinking. When you have different ideas, the work is much better than when you do it all by yourself, so I think work is really important to.” Annette Hardin teaches English at Carlsbad High School, she says the ideas learned through this hands-on exercise could be applied to subjects beyond science, technology, engineering, and math. “I don’t think enough students are exposed to inquiry based learning,” Hardin said. “This is a true inquiry based learning experience, so they see how it starts with confusion, and have to work together to solve the problem, and it’s really good for them to see that.” Hardin says if they do eventually want to be teachers, it’s important for them to experience different ways to learn. “They need to have all kinds of learning experiences,” Hardin said. “Before they can apply it to being a teacher, so this is great.” Monique Pino is excited to continue learning, and going into a career in teaching. “I’m actually taking an internship class,” Pino said. “So right now, I’m working with third graders for the semester, and that’s going good so far, so I thought I might as well take a trip and get a different experience.” Pino said she would use the ideas she learned from the hands on STEM exercise in a future classroom.

Education is a persistent topic in national and local politics – with all parties proposing their own solutions to fix the problems in the traditional U.S. education system. This topic is considered in great detail in the Sundance documentary MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED, with an examination of how many American educational methods have remained in place for far too long, as well as how the problems in the system are having a profound impact on the U.S. economy. The documentary is discussed with director Greg Whiteley and executive producer Ted Dintersmith in a special BYOD episode direct from Sundance with host Ondi Timoner. FILM INFO & GUEST BIO: Where a college diploma once meant a guaranteed job, now more than half of America's new college graduates are unable to find employment. Director Greg Whiteley (Mitt, 2014 Sundance Film Festival) locates the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers and has changed little since, despite radical changes in the marketplace wrought by technology and the outsourcing of labor. With a world of information available a click away, and the modern workplace valuing skills like collaboration and critical thinking, our rote-based system of learning has become outdated and ineffective. Charter schools like San Diego's High Tech High, which replaces standardized tests and compartmentalized subjects with project-based learning and a student-focused curriculum, offer an alternative. Whiteley follows students, teachers, and parents to see if this different model can reawaken the love of learning and offer the potential for a paradigmatic shift in education. Greg Whiteley is a director and producer - known for RESOLVED, MITT and NEW YORK DOLL – who founded his own production company One Potato Productions.
