After reading the whole psychology section of the small town library in his city, he set out to personally meet the authors of the books that thrilled him. In 2011, he started to consciously seek out the best psychologists, therapists and coaches all over Europe in order to learn from them. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Trailblazing education and game development visionary Lucien Vattel is at the forefront of a nationwide crusade to revolutionize learning in the classroom and beyond. As the CEO of the Los Angeles-based interactive curriculum creator and digital publisher GameDesk, Vattel is transforming the traditional school model into a hands-on, digitally-charged ecosystem for students to discover and nourish their greatest gifts, while embracing STEM skills through game-based learning. Founded to help at-risk students in low-income regions tap deeply into their intelligence and talents, GameDesk instills the value of learning through play, and empowers students to collaborate and be active producers of the content from which they learn. Building upon this methodology, Vattel founded PlayMaker, a next-generation, choose-your-own adventure middle school program designed to help teachers and students transcend the confines of textbooks and chalk boards. This is just the beginning of the GameDesk insurgence. Vattel recently secured the largest contribution in AT&T history to develop a national digital learning center and fully comprehensive online portal for educators. During the last 15 years, Vattel has spearheaded a variety of educational projects funded by the National Science Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Lockheed Martin, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Motorola, Sandia Labs, National Academies of Science, and others. Previously, Vattel co-founded and co-architected the undergraduate and master's computer science programs in game development at the University of Southern California, where he served as faculty lecturer. Big Idea: "Unboxing Education Through Gaming, Playing, and Making" Imagine formal education as a box that everyone, for the most part, passes through. We can put whatever we want in this box. Why don't we make it amazing? The talk looks at transforming the traditional school model into a playful hands-on, digitally-charged ecosystem for students to discover and nourish their greatest gifts, while embracing science, technology, and math skills through game-based learning. An example is a model for transforming the learning space, through educational games, play based curriculum, new PlayMaker school, and national digital learning center and portal.

Should you follow your passion, wherever it may take you? Should you do only what you love...or learn to love what you do? How can you identify which path to take? How about which paths to avoid? TV personality Mike Rowe, star of "Dirty Jobs" and "Somebody's Gotta Do It," shares the dirty truth in PragerU's 2016 commencement address. The first is “Congratulations.” The second is “Good luck.” Everything else is what I like to call, “The Dirty Truth,” which is just another way of saying, “It’s my opinion.” And in my opinion, you have all been given some terrible advice, and that advice, is this: Follow your passion. Every time I watch the Oscars, I cringe when some famous movie star—trophy in hand—starts to deconstruct the secret of their success. It’s always the same thing: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have what it takes, kid!”; and the ever popular, “Never give up on your dreams!” Look, I understand the importance of persistence, and the value of encouragement, but who tells a stranger to never give up on their dreams, without even knowing what it is they’re dreaming? How can Lady Gaga possibly know where your passion will lead you? Have these people never seen American Idol? Year after year, thousands of aspiring American Idols show up with great expectations, only to learn that they don’t possess the skills they thought they did. What’s really amazing though, is not their lack of talent—the world is full of people who can’t sing. It’s their genuine shock at being rejected—the incredible realization that their passion and their ability had nothing to do with each other. Look, if we’re talking about your hobby, by all means let your passion lead you. But when it comes to making a living, it’s easy to forget the dirty truth: just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean you won’t suck at it. And just because you’ve earned a degree in your chosen field, doesn't mean you’re gonna find your “dream job.” Dream Jobs are usually just that—dreams. But their imaginary existence just might keep you from exploring careers that offer a legitimate chance to perform meaningful work and develop a genuine passion for the job you already have. Because here’s another Dirty Truth: your happiness on the job has very little to do with the work itself. On Dirty Jobs, I remember a very successful septic tank cleaner, a multi-millionaire, who told me the secret to his success: “I looked around to see where everyone else was headed,” he said, “And then I went the opposite way. Then I got good at my work. Then I began to prosper. And then one day, I realized I was passionate about other people’s crap.” I’ve heard that same basic story from welders, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC professionals, hundreds of other skilled tradesmen who followed opportunity—not passion—and prospered as a result. Consider the reality of the current job market. Right now, millions of people with degrees and diplomas are out there competing for a relatively narrow set of opportunities that polite society calls “good careers.” Meanwhile, employers are struggling to fill nearly 5.8 million jobs that nobody’s trained to do. This is the skills gap, it’s real, and its cause is actually very simple: when people follow their passion, they miss out on all kinds of opportunities they didn’t even know existed. Coming to life in the 1970s with then-instructor Professor Emeritus Woodie Flowers at the lead, 2.007 was at the forefront of a revolution in engineering education, becoming one of the first hands-on classes to teach students not only how to design an object but also how to build it. Today, it’s a fun celebration of making that ends in an annual head-to-head robot competition on MechE’s Innovation Day in May.

From its humble inception as a small vocational-technical shop inside Williamsport High School in 1914 to its standing today as a special mission affiliate of Penn State University, Penn College and its predecessor institutions (Williamsport Area Community College and Williamsport Technical Institute) have continually met workforce demands, thanks to inspired leadership and an enduring commitment to hands-on education.

Step 1: Engage the cat Engage the cat or kitten in a game of play fighting. This will arouse the cat's natural tendency to bite. Step 2: Stop the game Stop the game as soon as you see the cat begin to expose its claws or teeth. Wait for the cat to calm down, and then resume the game. Step 3: Continue playing Continue playing with the cat. If the cat bites or scratches you, let out a scream. Stop playing and ignore the cat. Tip Consider spraying the cat with a spray bottle filled with water if the cat continues to bite you. A small spritz in the area of the cat's face is enough, but be careful not to spray the cat's ears. Step 4: Use the touch method Observe the areas on the cat's body that are most sensitive to contact -- typically the mouth, paws, ears, and tail. When sensitive areas are touched, there is a tendency for the cat to start biting. Step 5: Touch a sensitive area Touch one of the sensitive areas on the cat's body for a second. Then give the cat a treat. Step 6: Increase the contact time Gradually increase the amount of time that you are in contact with the sensitive area. Do this until the cat learns to tolerate increasing levels of contact there. Step 7: Repeat with other sensitive areas Repeat this procedure with other sensitive areas that provoke biting. Now you should have a cat whose meow is worse than its bite. Did You Know? Cats have two sets of teeth -- a first set that is lost when they are young, and a permanent set.

Today we’re going to go a little meta and talk about how computer science can support learning with educational technology. We here at Crash Course are big fans of interactive in-class learning and hands-on experiences, but we also believe in the additive power of educational technology inside and outside the classroom from the Internet itself and Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs to AI driven intelligent tutoring systems and virtual reality.
